Retired - what now

I sometimes feel uneasy when thinking about retirement! Don’t you? People often ask me, “What do you want to do when you retire?” And honestly, I have no idea! I avoid answering because then I must take stock and realize that retirement is ahead, whether I like it or not!

After a working routine for the past 40-odd years, to jointly provide a home, food, and education for a family, when this suddenly stops at a random age of approximately 65, what do the next 20 - 30 plus years look like? We are all living longer thanks to modern medicine, and perhaps walking on the beach, playing golf, or traveling will only fill some of that time. However, what will make life interesting, worthwhile, and fulfilling? That’s the big dilemma. Some people just retire; however, some people re-skill. Both are choices. Learning something totally new has no expiry date.

Learning isn’t a phase of life; it’s an ongoing habit. In 2026, anyone can achieve, with one small step at a time, with AI and all the amazing, often free resources available online. Learning a new skill and possibly creating a small business? Create an extra income to cover ever-increasing expenses!

Empower yourself towards confidence, independence, and relevance. Idly watching Netflix has taught me nothing; however, taking a course did! It expanded my ideas and gave me something new to think about!
